Magikarp Gains 340 Stat Points Overnight

The worst Pokémon in the game becomes one of the most feared at level 20, and the jump is the joint biggest in the series.

Magikarp has a base stat total of 200, the joint lowest of any Pokémon that is not a baby form. Gyarados has 540. Level 20 is where those two numbers meet, and the gap between them is 340 points — one of the largest single-step increases in the franchise.

The Attack stat is the joke

Magikarp's Attack is 10 — tied for the worst in the game, and famously irrelevant because for the first fifteen levels it can only learn Splash, a move that does nothing at all. Gyarados arrives with 125 Attack and an Intimidate ability that lowers the opponent's Attack the moment it enters.

That is a jump from "cannot damage anything under any circumstance" to "reduces your damage before it has taken a turn". Nothing else in the series changes character that completely at one threshold.

It happened twice, with identical numbers

Feebas is the other joke fish — ugly, useless, and famously difficult to find. Its base stat total is 200. Milotic, what it becomes, is 540.

The same trick, one generation later
Magikarp → Gyarados200 → 540
Feebas → Milotic200 → 540

Exactly the same start, exactly the same finish. Gen III took the Magikarp gag, rebuilt it around beauty rather than ferocity, and reused the numbers to the point. That is not a coincidence — it is a studio deliberately re-running a joke it knew had worked.

Why the game makes you earn it

Level 20 is later than it sounds for a Pokémon that contributes nothing. Magikarp learns Tackle at 15 and Flail at 30 — so for the first fifteen levels its entire moveset is Splash, and the only way to gain experience is to bring it into a fight, switch it out immediately, and let something else do the work.

That is a deliberate cost, and it is the reason the payoff reads as a reward rather than a gift. The game asks for fifteen levels of pure inconvenience up front and settles the account in one go. Very little else in the series is structured that way; most Pokémon improve gradually enough that you never notice a moment.

The lore keeps the transformation frightening

Rarely seen in the wild. Huge and vicious, it is capable of destroying entire cities in a rage.

The entries never treat Gyarados as a success story. It appears during wars and leaves burning ruins, it rampages until everything around it is demolished, and Crystal claims it turns up whenever there is world conflict. There is no line anywhere describing it as noble or tamed.

Which gives the evolution a shape most players miss while they are celebrating. You spend fifteen levels babying the most helpless creature in the game, and what you get for it is not a reward. It is something the Pokédex describes, repeatedly and across every generation, as a disaster with a body.
