Phantump Is a Child Who Died in the Forest, and It Wants You to Follow
The lore is bleak enough. Then Ultra Sun explains what it does with a child’s voice, and why.
Phantump is a small stump with a green sprout and a pair of eyes, and it is the single most upsetting Pokémon Game Freak has published — not because of what it is, but because of the last thing they wrote about it.
The premise
“According to old tales, these Pokémon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died while lost in the forest.”
X plays it safe — spirits possessing rotten stumps, no further detail. Y names them. Children, and specifically children who got lost and did not get out. Sun then removes the hedge that "old tales" provided, stating flatly that they are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died in the forest, and adding that their cries sound like screams.
And then Ultra Sun
“By imitating the voice of a child, it causes people to get hopelessly lost deep in the forest. It’s trying to make friends with them.”
Read that twice. The first sentence is a standard horror beat: a thing in the woods uses a child's voice to lead you astray. Every folklore tradition has one.
The second sentence takes it somewhere almost nothing in this series goes. It is trying to make friends. There is no malice in it at all. A dead child, using the only voice it has, doing the only thing it knows how to do — calling out in the forest — and the consequence is that whoever answers gets lost too.
It is not luring victims. It is a lonely child that has worked out that people come when it calls, and has not understood, or does not care, what happens to them once they are deep enough in to be like it.
Why that ordering matters
If the entry stopped after the first sentence, Phantump would be a monster and you would file it next to every other thing that calls your name from the trees. The second sentence forecloses that reading and leaves you with something worse: the creature is not doing anything wrong on purpose, and the outcome is exactly as bad.
The evolution closes the loop
Phantump evolves into Trevenant, a tall tree that the dex describes as controlling the trees in its forest and using its roots to trap intruders who harm the woods. The child that got lost becomes the forest itself, and starts keeping people out.
Read the line as a whole and it is a complete, closed story with a beginning and an end, told across four short entries in a monster catalogue: a child gets lost, dies, keeps calling, and eventually grows into the thing that stops anyone else coming in.
