Spoink Dies if It Stops Bouncing
Its heart is pumped by the impact of its own hopping. The Pokédex is explicit about what happens if it stops.
Spoink is a small round pig that bounces on a coiled tail with a pearl balanced on its head. It is drawn as comedy. The Pokédex entry attached to it is a death sentence with a mechanism.
The entry
“Spoink bounces around on its tail. The shock of its bouncing makes its heart pump. As a result, this Pokémon cannot afford to stop bouncing — if it stops, its heart will stop.”
The bouncing is not a personality trait. It is circulation. Spoink does not have a heart that beats on its own; it has a heart driven by percussion, and the percussion comes from its own body hitting the ground. FireRed states the consequence in four words: it apparently dies if it stops bouncing about.
Emerald then adds the detail that finishes it — it does not stop even when it is asleep. There is no off switch anywhere in this creature's life. It bounces awake, it bounces unconscious, and the moment the bouncing stops for any reason, so does it.
The pearl makes it worse
“Spoink keeps a pearl on top of its head. The pearl functions to amplify this Pokémon’s psychokinetic powers. It is therefore on a constant search for a bigger pearl.”
So the animal that cannot stop moving is also permanently searching for something. Both of its defining behaviours are compulsions it did not choose: bounce or die, and never stop looking for a better pearl. FireRed notes the pearl comes from Clamperl, which means it is not even its own — it found it.
It is the most cheerfully drawn tragedy in the dex
What makes Spoink land is the mismatch. Cubone wears a skull and looks like it. Yamask carries a face and looks like it. Spoink is bright pink, shaped like a spring, and animated with a bouncing idle that reads as delight — and the text under it says the delight is a life-support system.
Once you know, the sprite changes. It is not bouncing because it is happy. It is bouncing because that is the only way the blood moves, and it has been doing it every second since it was born, including while it sleeps, and it will do it until the day it does not.
